The Role
As the Machine Learning Team Lead, you will have the influence to pioneer new cutting-edge research into some of the most exciting and challenging deep learning problems, tackling bias in AI, enhancing diversity within speech engines, and building new tools and environments for ground-breaking Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR).
Strategically, this will be one of the most important hires we make, as you will be leading the ‘Representations Team’ who focus on representation and self-supervised learning within the context of speech. The successful candidate will be able to evolve our already state-of-the-art approach to reach even greater levels of accuracy and efficiency, advance our research direction and ambitions, and bring next-generation Speech products to market. Specific speech experience is beneficial, but not necessary.
You will need to be experienced in (and have a desire to): define a best-in-class machine learning vision and strategy, develop and grow your team of elite machine learning experts, be a role model across the AI division, and champion people’s perspectives, promoting a diverse and inclusive culture. As our Chief ML Engineer, this should be something that you care deeply about; helping others flourish and fuelling your team’s professional growth.
What you'll be doing:
- Leading by example and inspiring through a clear, productive and influential voice
- Building on proof-of-concept innovations from our research team to fit customer requirements and making machine learning innovations of your own to answer customer needs, integrating both into our product lines
- Playing a critical role in setting your team’s technical direction
- Driving the long-term direction of our products with the architect’s support
- Providing honest and constructive feedback into our products’ design
- Taking part in high level planning and team resourcing
- Striving to strike the right balance between producing output and allocating time to long-term high-impact projects
- Reviewing your team’s code
- Promoting your team’s work across the organization including non-technical teams
- Promoting team cohesiveness, a positive culture and good team spirit
- Attracting and hiring the right talent
Who we are looking for:
- You will have existing experience supervising or managing a team, delivering complex projects together successfully
- You will have conducted research into an exciting and relevant field, such as (but not exclusive to): self-supervised learning or acoustic modelling
- You will be naturally curious, continually striving to make an impact
- You’ll be inclusive, show empathy, and champion your team
- You will be a problem solver who can apply your skills to technical issues
- You are constantly thinking about how your team, product and outcomes can improve

- You’ll have solid Python, C++ and/or Shell skills
